    Hong Kong is outstanding for salary range in education at the rate of US$3,000-3,300 as basic salary compared to many different location, especially when joining the EDB NET scheme, that goes up to USD9,000 in time. Plus, many school provides extra bonus along with a basic salary. Beside, tutoring is great market for those who wish to make extra income. Tutoring rate per hour varies USD50-90

    The monthly salary range of a primary school EDB NET (PNET) is from (approx. US$3,867 to US$7,480) per month, and the monthly salary range of a secondary school EDB NET (SNET) is from (approx. US$3,867* to US$8,986*) per month. EDB NETs are also entitled to a housing allowance of HK$20,989/month and various fringe benefits if their normal place of residence is established to be outside Hong Kong. For more info click here

    HKD$ 20,000 (approx. 2500 usd) and above can be well accumulated, minimum salary is approximately HKD 10,000 (1280 usd), while the average salary in Hong Kong is HKD 16,000 (approx. 2000 usd). 

    Referring to average salary of a foreign teacher starts at the rate of US$ 3000-3300. 

    Teachers generally find that their salary gives them a purchasing power that is much stronger than in their home country. It’s possible to live comfortably and save up to half your salary

    A) Degree in English teaching + preferably teaching experience in an institution

  • Should I be Native English Speaker

    No. Fluent English speakers can also get teaching job if they are holding required documents.

  • I don’t know local language. Is that a problem?

    Students expect to get immersed in English during class and so speaking local language is actually discouraged in class. Often there is the option of having a local teaching assistant to help with giving instructions and translating if need be, especially for young learner classes.

  • I am degree holder in English teaching.  Do I need extra teaching certificate such as TEFL, TESOL, CELTA, etc.?

  • Is previous teaching experience required?

    The majority of schools prefer teachers with prior experience and references, however, there are still many opportunities for first time English teachers.

  • I am not a degree holder in English teaching. Do I need extra teaching certificate such as TEFL, TESOL, CELTA, etc.  If so, how can I get it ?

    If you have course named "Teaching English as Second Language", "Teaching English as Foreign Language" etc. in your transcript, please contact us to inform.

    If not available;
    You will need one of these certificates. The majority of schools require teachers to be TEFL / TESOL / CELTA qualified and certified, especially if the teacher doesn’t already hold a degree in teaching Englissh or holds a degree from another field

  • Accommodation

    The most important expense is housing in Hong Kong. However, we have affordable nice and cozy accommodation options are waiting for you such as private studio, shared apartment, service apartment. Fee varies US$700-1000

  • Will I have enough holiday to visit my family and friends?

    There are plenty of holidays in a year. Although holiday durations vary for each school, it may reach up to 90 days in year.

    Summer holidays typically last from mid July to end of August while other religious or cultural holidays (Christmas, Lunar New Year, Easter, etc.) are held from 1 to 2 weeks. Check out public holiday list here

    Annual leave policy is quite flexible and when combining with Hong Kong’s 17 public holidays, there are plenty of time for a teacher. All national public holidays off and assigned annual leave. You have good enough time to visit family & friends or explore the new places.

  • Hiring possibility?

    Anyone aged between 20-40 years and meet the requirements is considered ideal teacher. If this sounds you, then you have great chance to get a job.

  • Extra Income

    Tutoring outside of business hours is a legal process and you can give as many private lessons as you want. In Hong Kong average, the tuition fees for private lessons/tutoring vary from HKD 400-600 (USD 55-85).

  • Can we apply as a Couple or Friend?

  • Visa Free for Family

    You are free to move to Hong Kong with your family. Hong Kong Immigration Department allows your 1st degree family members to live, work full time or study under Dependent Visa in any field.

  • Transportation and Commuting time?

    Hong Kong with a population of 8 million has one of the most advanced transportation systems in the world. Although most of the work centers are located at the central points, average time of commute takes about 30 min.

  • Health Insurance

    Hong Kong ID card holders are eligible to benefit from public health system. High standard state hospitals offer very low rates. The public health system in Hong Kong SAR includes a large number of outpatient clinics, specialist clinics and more than 40 full-fledged state hospitals. However, dental health - if there is no emergency - is not part of the system and you should be treated by a private dentist and / or have an additional health insurance plan for dental treatment.

  • Retirement Pension

    Once your visa is activated, you are eligible to join MPF (Mandatory Provident Fund) as well as public health system.

  • Employment Visa

    Once you are offered an employment contract, we will be obtaining the employment visa before you leave your home country.

  • Visa Approval Process

    Hong Kong SAR Immigration Department starts this period with the application following the collection of all documents and states that it will be finalized in 4-6 weeks. However, this period may vary depending on the initiative of IMMD

    All kindergartens in Hong Kong are run privately. Some of them are non-profit-making, while others are independent institutions. The curricula in kindergarten vary from one institution to another, although the government recognizes the child-centered educational approach.

    Primary schools run on morning, afternoon, or whole-day schedules. The morning and afternoon schedules were created to accommodate the number of pupils attending primary schools and to avoid overcrowding.

    Secondary school (in some countries referred to as high school) education in Hong Kong is split into two parts: junior secondary and senior secondary schooling. Both of them lasts three years.

  • Cost of Living

    Generally, living expenses in Hong Kong are reasonable although housing is the main expense. Private studios and sharing apartments is a viable option compared to renting an entire apartment.

  • Working Hours

    This may vary according to body of institution. It is generally 10 am to 6:30 pm in learning centers while 8:30am to 4:30pm, i.e. 8 hours. In public and private schools Teachers may be required to attend special day activities like open day or Parents’ Day.

  • Tax Rate

    Hong Kong SAR is known as a global tax heaven as its low and simple tax regime. Salary tax is quite low compared to other countries and capped at 17%

  • Can non-native English speakers work as TEFL teachers?

However, non-native speakers will have to be more patient and persistent when job hunting as sometime work visa regulations might be challenging for non-native teachers.

  • What does a TEFL teacher do?

    This will of course vary depending on the type of job but typically you will be teaching a range of skills from speaking, listening, reading and writing. There is usually a focus on using the ‘communicative approach’ to teaching which encourages students to speak English and use the English language as much as possible. The teacher will introduce new language, have the students use it in a controlled framework to begin with and then move on to using it in a more natural way through group work, pair work and debates, where the emphasis is on increased student talk time. A typical class will include a mix of activities and interactions, some course book work, English based games and storytelling. These days technology plays a big part in the classroom with teachers making use of interactive whiteboards.

  • Which type of school I can work with via TEFL

  • What's the Difference Between TEFL, TESOL & CELTA?

    TEFL, TESOL and CELTA are often used interchangeably. TESOL and TEFL are the most popular terms when talking about teacher training courses worldwide for young learners, while CELTA is a specific brand of TESOL course operating under the umbrella of Cambridge University focusing on Teaching Adults.

  • What happens if I fail the assignment?

    The passing mark for every module is 60%. Students have to pass every single assignment/test. If they fail an assignment, they will have one more chance to pass. If they fail the same assignment twice, they will fail the whole course.

    Note that even if students fail and passes the make-up assignments/tests, they cannot fail and revise more than 4 assignments. They will receive an academic notice after failing 3 times
